Breast reduction, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to reduce the size of large breasts, making them smaller and more proportionate to the rest of the body. Dr. Beran performs Breast Reduction procedures at Laser & Cosmetic Surgery Specialists to give the breasts a more a natural looking contour.

Breast Reduction- The Procedure

Breast reduction is an outpatient procedure most often performed with general anesthesia. The most common incision used for breast reduction is an anchor-shaped one. This incision runs in a circle around the areola, extends vertically down to the crease beneath the breast, and then runs horizontally along the breast crease. Through this incision, excess fat, glandular tissue and skin are removed, the nipple-areolar complex is moved to a higher position and, if necessary, large areolas are reduced in size. The incisions are then closed.

Women may feel self-conscious about their large breasts and they may avoid certain activities like sports and exercise.

After Breast Reduction Surgery: What to Expect

After surgery, gauze and a surgical bra are placed on the breasts and these are typically worn for several days. If drains are inserted at the incision sites these are removed within a few days. Patients may experience some discomfort and this can be alleviated with medication. Swelling and bruising are common but will fade in time. Most patients find that they can return to work and other normal activities within approximately two weeks, though exercise and strenuous activities should be curtailed for three to four weeks.

Possible Complications of Breast Reduction

All surgery carries some risk. The potential complications associated with breast reduction may include adverse anesthesia reaction, bleeding, infection, sensation changes in the breasts or nipples, and asymmetry.
