What defines beauty across all generations, cultures, and genders? Facial balance between the upper, middle, and lower third of the face. A strong, defined jawline frames the lower face and projects confidence and youthfulness in both men and women.
As the face ages, it loses the definition of its jawline due to a combination of issues. Its muscles weaken, and the loss of muscle tone causes sagging in the lower part of the face. A weak chin and jawline leads to premature jowls and skin sagging in the neck. If there is weight gain under the chin, or submental fat, then the chin and jaw lose their separation. At the same time, the neck muscles (platysma) are getting stronger and pulling down, also contributing to the problem. When the jaw loses its contour, people look older, making them self-conscious.

There are several surgical and non-surgical solutions for this problem that have been used for many years. Men and women who are in need of correction often turn to cosmetic injectables, rather than surgery, to treat the jawline area.

Dermal Fillers For Jawline Definition
Some people wish to add definition to their jawline and chin. Perhaps you were born with a weak chin or jaw definition has been lost due to aging. Adding definition to the jawline can significantly improve a person’s appearance.
Plastic surgery options for jawline enhancement include chin implants and specific neck or facelift techniques that define the jawline. However, more and more, people are choosing non-surgical options to define the jawline or add volume to the chin.
Jawline fillers are an effective treatment for:
- Sculpting the jawline, giving it a more contoured and defined appearance
- Strengthening a recessed chin, giving it more separation from the neck
- Decreasing the appearance of the jowls, creating a “lifted” appearance
Different Types of Dermal Fillers Available
The jawline is the foundation of the face, and dermal fillers can give it a slimmer, more youthful profile which can dramatically change how you feel about your appearance. At Laser & Cosmetic Surgery Specialists, we use fillers that are safe, natural and long lasting. They have the ability to lift and sculpt while maintaining their shape over time.
The dermal fillers that we like most to improve the jawline are Juvederm Volux and Voluma, Restylane products, and Sculptra. HA or hyaluronic fillers are ideal for creating a more defined jawline. They are safer than products like Radiesse, as they are reversible.
Dr. Ran Rubinstein has over 20 years of experience with dermal fillers and is a physician educator, training other dermatologists and plastic surgeons to achieve outstanding, natural-looking results. He offers the very finest in state-of-the-art dermal fillers and skin care treatments.
Juvederm Voluma and Volux
Juvederm Voluma is a hyaluronic acid based dermal filler commonly used to enhance the chin and jawline. Results last for up to 2 years for most patients. Recently Juvederm added an exciting new filler to its collection – Juvederm Volux. Juvederm Volux is the first hyaluronic acid filler to gain FDA approval for enhancing sharper jawline definition with results lasting 1 year (although we anticipate that Juvederm Volux will last longer than 2 years). This safe and effective jawline injectable can also be used to treat the chin and diminish the appearance of the jowls. Juvederm Voluma and Volux will please both men and women who are looking to improve their jawline and the appearance of the entire lower face.
In a clinical study, clinical trial participants who received Juvederm Volux injections were satisfied with the appearance of their lower face and jawline twelve months post-procedure. Juvederm Volux and Voluma will last longer than most other fillers and it gives you better and more predictable results. Since they are made from hyaluronic acid, they are safer than many other dermal fillers and results are reversible.

Restylane Lyft, Defyne and Contour
Several hyaluronic acid fillers within the Restylane product portfolio are excellent for enhancing the chin and jawline. These products include Restylane Lyft, Defyne and Contour. Product choice depends on factors including skin thickness, degree of skin laxity and desired result. Dr. Rubinstein will determine the best product(s) to use based on a thorough consultation.
Sculptra
Sculptra injection is also an effective treatment to get a better jawline that Dr. Rubinstein prefers when patients want a biostimulator for collagen production. Three injections scheduled six to eight weeks apart are necessary. Sculptra stimulates your body to produce its own natural volume over the course of 3 to 6 months and results last for up to 2 years. We recommend a single annual maintenance treatment for optimal results. Sculptra is often used in combination with HA fillers in more mature patients as HA fillers give a crisper, more defined result to the jawline compared to Sculptra.
We prefer Sculptra over Radiesse, another biostimulant commonly used for jawline enhancement. While Radiesse looks crisp and defined initially, it quickly loses its sculpted appearance due to its intrinsic properties.
What to Expect During the Filler Procedure
Dr. Rubinstein has expertise in many treatment options and will work with you to develop a customized plan for enhancing your jawline.
Dermal filler injection treatment does not take long, only about 15 minutes per area. A topical anesthetic cream is applied and the fillers also contain lidocaine to temporarily numb the treatment area and minimize discomfort. After the injections, you will be free to go about your normal activities.
Results can be seen immediately and the skin will look and feel firmer, fuller, and healthier. Improvement is gradual when using Sculptra, as collagen production will continue over the next six to twelve weeks to see full results.
What to Expect After Jawline Augmentation
Most injectables share similar side effects. It’s normal to have some mild bruising, swelling, and tenderness after treatments, which typically subside in about three days. It is also generally advised to avoid intense exercise and direct sun exposure for at least 24 hours. Complications are rare and Dr. Rubinstein will discuss concerns and risks with you ahead of time.
There are always possible complications with any filler post-treatment. However, documented complications are very rare. For people who are prone to keloids, fillers that stimulate collagen can result in nodule formation. Other rare side effects might include long-lasting swelling, infection, numbness, or an allergic reaction.
Inadvertently injecting filler into a blood vessel can result in vascular occlusion but this complication is very rare when injections are done by an experienced provider with extensive knowledge of anatomy.
At your consultation, Dr. Rubinstein will review your medical history and assess your current health to reduce the chance of any serious reactions or side effects. He will also consider any medications that you are currently taking and any previous medical or cosmetic treatments.
At Laser and Cosmetic Surgery Specialists, our procedures are carried out in compliance with all FDA health and safety standards. Every effort is taken by Dr. Rubinstein and his team to minimize the risk of complications.
The Injectable Jawline Treatment Candidate
Men and women who are 18 years and older and are unhappy with their jawlines can be candidates for jawline enhancement. The ideal injection candidates are in good physical health, are non-smokers, and have no serious underlying medical conditions that would impede the healing process. Also, there should be no recent trauma to the lower face or other areas where injections will be given. Ideal candidates will be well-informed at the consultation and have reasonable expectations about the results. Patients are advised to tell Dr. Rubinstein about allergies and any allergic reactions that have occurred.
Jawline Filler Broken Down by Generation
Gen Z: They typically present with an interest in fuller lips and a “snatched jawline.” They want instant results. Although surgery using permanent implants is a treatment option, most end up having jawline fillers.
Gen Y (Millennials): They also want defined jawlines just like Gen Z. The difference is that there may be a need for skin toning. They may therefore need combination therapy with skin tightening and more jawline filler than the same Gen Z patient. Non-surgical skin tightening procedures like RF Microneedling greatly enhance the results one would get with filler alone, recreating that chiseled sculpted jawline and eliminating early jowls.
Gen X: Younger Gen X patients have very similar requirements and treatment plans to our more mature Millennials. There may however be more of a need to address skin laxity which may require minimally invasive surgeries like Laser Lift with Fractionated CO2 laser. They may also require more syringes of filler. I also like combining jawline HA fillers such as Juvederm Volux with biostimulants like Sculptra for a defined jawline.
More mature Gen X and Baby Boomer patients benefit the most from surgery to restore jawline definition.

Jawline Filler in Newburgh, NY | Your Questions Answered
Juvederm Volux is the first FDA-approved hyaluronic acid injectable to be used for enhancing the jawline with results lasting 1 year (though we anticipate results will last up to 2 years or longer). It will last longer than most fillers and its results are reversible and more predictable.
Some patients may prefer a biostimulant filler to define their jawlines. In this situation, Dr. Rubinstein usually recommends using Sculptra which stimulates your body to gradually produce its own volume over the course of 3 to 6 months.
Some dermal fillers provide results that range from six to twelve months while others will last for up to 2 years. Longer-lasting fillers require less touch-up appointments. Smoking and vigorous exercise can shorten the duration of the results.
Sculptra and Radiesse stimulate your body’s collagen production, improving appearance gradually. Hyaluronic acid fillers like Juvederm and Restylane products are a gel that act as a cushion for the face, binding with water molecules to plump the skin. These fillers are all used to contour a beautiful, defined jaw and chin.
Yes! A more feminine jawline will have a wider angle and not project beyond the cheeks. It has a softer appearance. The face is more oval or heart shaped. A more masculine jawline is square shaped and will have a narrower angle and project beyond the cheeks. The same concepts are also used in treating gender fluid and transgender patients. Treatment plans are tailored to each patient’s unique aesthetic goals.
The cost of jawline fillers will depend on product choice (1 year versus longer lasting) as well as the number of syringes needed. Most patients need 2 syringes for jawline. If they also want to define their chins or reduce their jowls, a minimum of 4 syringes will be required. The cost is significantly less than surgery and because it can last 2 years, Juvederm Volux is a great choice due to its value versus shorter lasting fillers. It is best to schedule a consultation with Dr. Ran Rubinstein so you can determine what you need together.
Unlike other injectable products such as Sculptra or Radiesse, Juvederm and Restylane products do not rely on collagen production for results; it gives you a jawline “overnight” as results are instantaneous.
Chewing gum for jawline definition or using jawline exercise devices comes with several risks, including jaw strain, TMJ, and damaged teeth. These exercises only target the muscles used for chewing. They do not help with chin projection, or address submental fat or loose skin under the chin. They typically deliver the more masculine, square jaw.
We typically don’t recommend threads because they are not effective and don’t last. A vertical deep plane facelift will give the most natural long lasting jawline contouring result in more mature patients. Less jawline filler is needed to enhance their surgical result.
When jawline fillers no longer give us that defined jawline, it may be time to consider surgical intervention. Overfilling a jawline can result in an unnatural appearance.
