You knew having a baby would change your life. You didn’t really think about how much pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding would change your body, though. A mommy makeover is a combination of surgeries designed to help women get their pre-baby bodies back, after having babies.
One of the best things about a mommy makeover is that you and your surgeon can really tailor the procedures to meet your specific needs. Although the term mommy makeover is usually used to describe a tummy tuck and breast lift or augmentation after pregnancy, you can have a variety of other surgeries performed based on how childbirth has changed your body.
Timing Your Mommy Makeover
Now that you have children, you might be thinking that you’ll never have the time to schedule a mommy makeover or the time to set aside for recovery. Getting the timing of your surgeries right is important for your results and for your overall health and recovery. There are a few things to consider when scheduling your procedures.
One incredibly important thing to think about before you schedule a mommy makeover is if you’re really finished having children. You can have plastic surgery before you’re finished with pregnancy and childbirth, but it is likely that additional pregnancies after a tummy tuck or breast augmentation will change or undo the results you achieved from those surgeries.
The state of your body is another factor that influences when you can or should schedule your mommy makeover. If you’ve recently had your last child, it’s usually a good idea to wait around six months after delivery before you start to consider surgery. That waiting period will give your body time to bounce back from the pregnancy. You’ll have time to lose the baby weight and for your body to heal.
Your weight also plays a role in deciding whether or not the time is right for a makeover. A mommy makeover doesn’t include weight loss surgery. For the best results possible, you want to be at or very near to your goal weight or pre-baby weight. If you are breastfeeding, you might want to wait until you’ve weaned your last child, to give your breasts time to return to a stable size.
Choosing Your Procedures
Your plastic surgeon can help you choose the procedures that are most appropriate for you during a mommy makeover. Usually, the procedures performed are designed to target specific areas that pregnancy affects.
One of the most obvious areas is the abdomen. You might have a had a flat stomach pre-baby. But, the stretching that occurred during pregnancy can leave you with loose skin in that area after birth. Even if you don’t have a lot of extra fat, the extra, sagging skin can make it difficult to fit into your clothes and make you feel self-conscious about wearing a swimsuit or body-conscious clothing.
A tummy tuck is usually a key part of a mommy makeover. The surgery involves excising sagging, loose skin, liposuction to remove unwanted fat and a tightening of the muscles in the abdominal area. Afterwards, you have a flatter, smoother stomach. Depending on what your abdominal area looked like pre-baby, it might look even better after a mommy makeover.
The process also usually involves some type of breast procedure or a combination of breast procedures. Here’s where the ability to tailor your mommy makeover comes in. Perhaps the combination of pregnancy and breastfeeding has left you with smaller, deflated breasts. Breast augmentation can restore or increase the size of the breasts.
Some women might not want to increase breast size, but aren’t happy that their breasts seem saggier or droopier than before. A breast lift elevates the breast tissue, creating a perkier look. The surgery can be performed with augmentation or on its own as part of a mommy makeover.
Breasts and tummy aren’t the only areas affected by pregnancy. Your mommy makeover can also include:
- A butt lift
- Liposuction or Coolsculpting
- Facial plastic surgery
- Thigh lift
Recovering After Your Mommy Makeover
The amount of time you can dedicate to recovery after a mommy makeover might influence the range and type of procedures you choose. For example, if you can’t leave the kids with a relative or friend, you might prefer treatments that have a shorter recovery time, such as non-surgical fat removal with Coolsculpting or injectables to reduce the signs of aging on your face.
But if you do have a lot of support from your family, spouse and friends, and can take several weeks to recover, it can be worth considering more involved procedures such as a tummy tuck and breast surgeries. Often, the recovery time after a mommy makeover can be longer than recovery after a single surgery, but still shorter than recovery after having the surgeries performed separately.
After giving so much to your kids and family, you deserve a bit of “me” time. The great thing about a mommy makeover is that, no matter which procedures you choose, the process is all about you!
