SmartLipo vs. Traditional Liposuction
Both SmartLipo and traditional liposuction achieve similar results, but they are performed differently. The end result of either technique is to have a smoother, slimmer body contour. The traditional liposuction procedure has been around for many years, whereas SmartLipo is a more recent development that allows the physician to use a laser to facilitate fat removal. In general, liposuction is not considered to be a weight loss procedure; it is recommended for people that are already at or near their target weight who are looking to remove stubborn fat that has not responded to diet and exercise. In order to maintain the results that can be achieved with either traditional liposuction or SmartLipo, a healthy diet with lots of fruits and vegetables along with regular exercise must be followed afterward. Liposuction can be performed on different parts of the body such as the abdominal area, hips, buttocks, upper arms, and thighs.
SmartLipo is a fairly new technique that allows the physician to use a laser to liquefy and remove excess fat while tightening the skin the in the area. The SmartLipo procedure is less invasive than traditional liposuction and it has a faster recovery period. During the procedure, the physician will provide a local anesthetic to the area and make a small incision to insert the cannula, which is a hollow metal tube fitted with a small laser fiber. The laser energy melts the fat which is then removed with suction using traditional liposuction methods. The patient will likely be conscious during the entire procedure and experience very little, if any, discomfort. Once the procedure has been completed, the patient will be given a special compression garment to reduce swelling. On average, patients are able to recover from the surgery within two to four days, but they will be advised to avoid rigorous exercise for a week.
The traditional liposuction procedure has been around for many years and it is still an effective procedure to eliminate excess fat. In traditional liposuction, the surgeon moves the cannula back and forth to disrupt the fat cells which are then suctioned out with a vacuum device. The procedure often requires general anesthesia. The recovery period for traditional liposuction is typically one to two weeks.
The primary difference between SmartLipo and traditional liposuction is the use of the laser which facilitates the fat removal. Rather than manipulating the cannula to manually break up the fat cells, the laser melts the excess fat. This allows for a gentler, less invasive procedure with less discomfort, less bruising and swelling, and a quicker return to normal activities. The laser also helps to tighten the skin.
