You don’t have to be overweight to have a double chin. Although carrying a few extra pounds can lead to a double chin, plenty of people develop one thanks to the aging process or their genes. No matter the cause, having a bit of extra fat beneath the chin can add years to your life and make you feel self-conscious about your appearance.
Since the problem isn’t always caused by extra pounds, it can be difficult to eliminate a double chin with diet or exercise. There’s good news, though. A number of treatments, both surgical and non, can permanently remove the extra, unwanted fat from the chin area. If it’s time to say “goodbye” to your double chin, here are a few treatments to consider.
Freeze Your Double Chin with Coolsculpting
Coolsculpting is a non-surgical treatment that freezes away fat. A number of different sized applicators are designed to allow the procedure to work on various areas of the body. One of the newest applicators is the CoolMini, which is made to fit under the chin.
The CoolMini works like any other Coolsculpting treatment. The procedure takes about an hour to complete and many people get the results they want after just one or two treatments. During treatment, the applicator is placed on the skin beneath the chin. A blast of frigid air destroys the fat in the chin area, but it doesn’t cause damage to the skin or other tissues.
You won’t see results immediately after Coolsculpting. Usually, your body needs time to flush the destroyed fat cells away. For the most part, people notice a significant diminishing of their double chin after about three to four months.
The fat that’s removed during Coolsculpting is gone for good. But that doesn’t mean that remaining fat cells can’t get larger or that submental fullness won’t return. To keep your chin looking sleek and youthful after treatment with the CoolMini, it’s important to stick to a healthy diet.
Dissolve Your Double Chin with Kybella
If you’re not a fan of icy cold temperatures, the CoolMini isn’t your only fat removal option for the chin area. Kybella is another available treatment. While Coolsculpting gets rid of fat by freezing it, Kybella eliminates fat by dissolving it.
The main ingredient in Kybella is deoxycholic acid, which is naturally found in the human body. The job of deoxycholic acid is to break down fat cells. It works by destroying the walls of the cells and their internal structure, so that your body can metabolize and flush them out.
Your surgeon will administer Kybella by injection. Depending on the amount of fat you have, you might receive up to 50 injections in a single treatment session. If that sounds a bit frightening, don’t worry. The needle is small and the injections are quick. For the most part, a single treatment session typically takes less than 30 minutes. If you’re concerned about the pinch of the needle, your surgeon can apply a topical anesthetic to numb the area and ensure your comfort.
Many people need between three and six Kybella treatments to get the results they want. You might need more or less, depending on the size of your double chin. Downtime after each treatment is minimal and most people are able to return to work right away.
Results can take some time to appear, as the body needs time to flush away the destroyed fat. But many people start to notice an improvement after the first couple of treatments.
Minimize Your Double Chin with a Neck Lift
Although a neck lift isn’t specifically designed to treat a double chin, it can definitely help people who have a double chin as well as some laxity in the skin around their neck. As you get older, the skin in the neck and chin area can start to sag, leading to what some people call a “turkey wattle.” In some cases, people have both the loose skin of a turkey wattle and the excess fat that contributes to a double chin.
A neck lift helps create a smoother and sleeker neck and chin area by tightening the skin and, in some cases, tightening the main muscle of the neck. Your surgeon might also use liposuction to remove extra fat from the neck and chin area.
The neck lift is a more involved procedure than either Kybella injections or Coolscupting with the CoolMini. Results are long lasting, but a fair amount of downtime is usually needed after the surgery. You might need to take a week or two off from work to recover after treatment, for example.
