Liposuction is one of those procedures that a lot of people want, but also one of the procedures that a lot of people have misconceptions about. There’s a lot of misinformation out there when it comes to liposuction and to laser assisted lipo procedures like SmartLipo. If you are considering removing extra, stubborn, unwanted fat, it’s important to understand what’s a myth and what’s the truth before you have the surgery.
Liposuction Misconception 1: It’s for Weight Loss
It makes sense that people often assume that having liposuction is a quick, simple way to lose weight. After all, the goal of the procedure is to get rid of extra fat and create a slimmer look. But, lipo won’t do much for you if you are significantly overweight or if you have a lot of pounds to lose before you reach your weight loss goal.
Quite simply, it’s not a weight loss tool. Your surgeon won’t be able to remove enough fat safely for you to lose a significant amount of weight from the surgery. Instead, lipo is typically recommended to patients who are very near or at their goal or target weight but still bothered by stubborn areas of fat like saddle bags or a spare tire. You should think of fat removal surgery as putting the finishing touch on your weight loss program, not as the starting point for losing a ton of weight.
Liposuction Misconception 2: There’s No Downtime
If only you could go in for fat removal surgery and be able to resume your regular activities right away. While SmartLipo does have a shorter recovery time of just a few days compared to traditional liposuction, you’ll still need to give yourself time to recover. That means wearing a compression garment to help smooth and shape the treated area for a few days or weeks and taking up to four days off from work to rest up.
Even after you’re able to return to work, you’ll still need to avoid certain activities for a few more days. Usually, it’s recommended that you avoid working out or any other sort of strenuous activity for about 10 days.
Liposuction Misconception 3: You’ll Never Gain Weight Again
It would be amazing if having liposuction meant that you’d never gain weight again and that you’d always be at your goal weight. Sadly, that’s not the case. The fat removed from your body during the surgery won’t come back. But since lipo doesn’t remove every single fat cell from your body, the ones that remain can become larger if you do gain weight.
If you want to maintain your new shape and weight after surgery, the best thing to do is eat a healthy diet and to exercise. You can keep the fat and weight off, but you have to make some effort to do so.
Liposuction Misconception 4: It Treats Cellulite
Cellulite is caused in part by fat deposits just beneath the skin. So it’s understandable that people often assume that liposuction is a suitable treatment for it. But, cellulite is more of a skin problem than a fat problem. Removing excess fat from an area with cellulite won’t create a smoother look since there’s more at work beneath the skin that simply excess fat. If you have cellulite, a treatment such as Cellulaze, which is specifically FDA approved to treat cellulite, is often a better option. Cellulaze is a laser treatment. During it, energy from a laser slices through the collagen fibers that pull on the top layer of skin, creating the dimpled cellulite pockets. Once those fibers are cut, the skin becomes smooth and pockets of cellulite fade from view.
Liposuction Misconception 5: It’s the Only Way to Get Rid of Fat
Traditional liposuction and SmartLipo are effective ways to get rid of extra, unwanted fat. But they aren’t the only option for removing excess fat from the body. Another fat removal option is Coolsculpting. Coolsculpting is a non-surgical treatment that works by freezing the fat in the designated area.
While SmartLipo and traditional liposuction remove the fat from the body right away, during treatment, Coolsculpting only destroys the fat. It’s up to your body to flush the damaged fat out, which can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months.
Since it is a non-surgical procedure, Coolsculpting doesn’t require incisions, anesthesia or a lengthy downtime. It can be a suitable substitute for surgery if you don’t have the time to dedicate to recovery or can’t take multiple days off from work to recuperate. It can also be suitable for you if you don’t mind waiting for up to four months before seeing your final results.
