Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that is designed to enhance the breasts by adding more volume to create a firmer, more voluptuous appearance. Breast augmentation is also known as augmentation mammoplasty and it typically involves the placement of a saline or silicone gel implant to enlarge the breasts. It is an elective surgery that some women may consider for a number of reasons, for instance to correct a deformity, restore volume following pregnancy, enlarge small breasts, or improve asymmetry. Breast augmentation can make a woman feel more confident about her body as well as increase her overall self-esteem.
Types of Breast Implants
Women have the option of choosing a saline or silicone gel implant for the breast augmentation procedure. While both of these options achieve similar results, there are some slight differences between them. Saline implants consist of a silicone shell which is placed into the body and then filled with saline solution. Silicone gel implants are made of a silicone shell that comes pre-filled with a silicone gel and they are placed into the body in a similar fashion, though they do require a larger incision as they are pre-filled. Saline implants tend to be more firm while silicone gel implants tend to be more soft and pliable and some people say that they feel more like real breasts.
During consultation, Dr. Rubinstein utilizes a new state-of-the-art 3D imaging device from Canfield. Digital imaging offers patients, especially those considering breast augmentation, the ability to view the results of the procedure before undergoing surgery. Patients stand in front of the imaging system while a photograph is taken of the face and/or body and a realistic high-resolution image appears on the screen. Dr. Rubinstein is then able to show patients what their body would look like with various sizes, types, and styles of breast implants.
Prior to digital imaging, patients were given different sizers to place inside their bra and “try out” when deciding what implants were best for them. The process was highly uncomfortable for many women and did not accurately represent the actual results. With 3D imaging using the Canfield VECTRA system, patients are able to see exactly what outcomes can be achieved from breast surgery. Adjustments are easily able to be made and compared before making a final decision. The surgeons at Laser & Cosmetic Surgery Specialists feel that the new tool will further improve consultation experiences, offering many benefits for the patient and physician.
The Procedure and Recovery Process
Dr. Rubinstein performs the breast augmentation procedure in the on-site joint commission certified surgical suite at Laser & Cosmetic Surgery Specialists of Newburgh, New York, located in the Hudson Valley. The procedure will begin with the application of general anesthesia. The surgeon will then make an incision in one of three locations: in the crease underneath the breaths, in the armpit, or around the areola. For saline implants, the implant shell will be inserted into the body and then filled with the saline solution. For silicone, implants, the physician will make a lager incision to fit the pre-filled implant into the area. The results of the procedure are immediately noticeable, but it will take some time for the swelling to go down. This procedure has a recovery period of about two weeks and the physician may provide a compression garment or support bra to aid in the healing process. Most patients find that they can return to work and many other normal activities within just a few days.
The breast augmentation procedure is one of the many procedures that can be done to enhance the breasts. Depending on the needs of the patient, augmentation may be combined with a breast lift. Consultation with a qualified plastic surgeon will help you to select the right procedure to achieve your desired results.
