After Breast Augmentation: You and Your New Breasts

October 21, 2014 by Laser & Cosmetic Surgery Specialists

Breast Augmentation in NYThere is a lot of planning that goes into your breast augmentation surgery, so it’s easy to get lost in the details. But have you spent any time thinking about what life will be like after your breast augmentation surgery is over? Most patients don’t have the time to think about how life will change after recovery. Here’s what you should know as you enter this important transition period.

What Happens Right After My Breast Augmentation Surgery?

Most patients of breast augmentation seek the surgery because they want to change their bodies for the better. It’s nice to imagine life with your new breasts, but you’ll also need to know how to help your body heal after surgery in order to get to your ideal new look. Otherwise, you might experience some unexpected side effects or sensations that might seem unusual if you’re unprepared. Here’s what you should expect in those early days after your breast augmentation surgery:

  • Higher breasts, maybe even too high. Right away, it might seem to you that your breast implants are too high up to appear natural. Believe it or not, this is a normal side effect of the procedure that will resolve itself gradually within the first two or three months. The breasts will adjust and move down to a natural-looking position.
  • Weird sensations in the breasts and nipples. With all the changes made to your breasts, you might feel like your nerves are highly sensitive. You may experience tingly, numbness, and pinpricking sensations throughout the breasts but especially in the nipples. This, too, will subside as the breasts heal.
  • Heightened emotions. You might plan to be thrilled with your post-op breasts, but your hormones and emotions will get the better of you. It is very common for patients to shift moods, feel a little sad or tearful, and feel confused about their emotional state. This will also pass with time, as the body regulates and adjusts to the new changes.
  • Initial doubts. It is extremely common for breast augmentation patients to feel a little remorse about the size of breasts they have chosen. Most often, there is a desire to go even bigger, perhaps big enough to encourage you to pick up the phone to call your surgeon. Have some patience, wait for your body to heal, and keep in mind that you and your surgeon planned the size of your breasts around your body proportions so they would look their best.

Can My Implants Affect My Quality of Life?

It’s common to hear that bigger breasts will make you happier, but is it really true? Can a breast augmentation really improve your quality of life? Many surgeons and medical researchers want to know the answer to these questions as well, which has led to many studies being conducted on the topic. As it turns out, satisfactory results from breast augmentation can lead to an overall improvement in a patient’s quality of life. This can include better self-esteem, increased self-worth, and higher confidence levels in all areas of the patient’s life. Many breast augmentation patients report feeling more feminine, beautiful, and confident once their recovery is completed.

Of course, this happiness comes from satisfactory results only, so you want to take care that you do everything possible to get the results you really want. Select a plastic surgeon with the experience and a high rate of patient satisfaction. Spend time during your breast augmentation consultation to talk about the results you imagine, consider your body proportions, and hear the surgeon’s recommendations as well. Together, you can plan for the desired results that will reap these incredible mental and emotional benefits for you.

How Will Breast Implants Change My Body?

Your implants become a part of your body after surgery, so they’re definitely going to make changes to the look and feel of your body. Not only will your breast implants change you, but the changes your body goes through could affect them as well. Gaining weight, growing older, being pregnant, and breastfeeding are all different changes that can change the way your breasts look. The skin can be stretched and your breasts may droop as a result; these changes are normal for breasts without implants as well. The major difference is that women with implants may notice the changes faster.

When you do eventually notice that your breasts have begun to sag for whatever reason, consult with your plastic surgeon for advice. The placement of your implants won’t affect the rest of the breast tissues as they descend, but you may be able to have a breast lift procedure to correct any unwanted shifts. This is the most effective way to restore your breasts’ youthful appearance.

How Long Will My Results Last After Breast Augmentation?

Breast surgery can provide you with an improved body contour, better self-esteem, and more. Unfortunately, the results you love so much won’t last forever. Your breast implants can become damaged, just like your real body parts, and may require replacement at some point. To keep up with your implant health, you’ll need to monitor your own health and your breasts to be sure all is well. Make (and keep) appointments with your plastic surgeon to have everything checked out regularly and don’t be surprised if a replacement is needed within five to 10 years. Your surgeon will be your greatest resource after your surgery, so work with him to ensure your breast implants last as long as possible.
