Advanced “Gummy Bear” Breast Implants Have Advantages Over Other Implant Types
Gummy bears: delicious treat or great new breast implant option? The answer is both. The latter is not edible, but it is equally as appealing for women who are interested in breast enhancement. Dr. Rubinstein performs breast augmentation with the increasingly popular “gummy bear” implants for his Mid-Hudson Valley, New York, patients.
As you may have guessed by the moniker, gummy bear implants feel similar to the soft and squishy candy by the same name. The cohesive silicone gel implants feel much more natural than their saline counterparts and are able to hold their shape, even if rupture occurs. Leakage is very rare with this more advanced form of silicone implant, as they retain their shape even when the outer shell covering is removed or damaged. Imagine cutting into a gummy bear candy and the effect is the same. The lower rate of rupture makes the gummy bear implants much safer than other forms of implants. The high-strength silicone gel implants, also known as form-stable breast implants, were approved by the FDA in March of 2012.
In general, silicone implants are preferred over saline implants by many patients and surgeons. Saline implants have a solid silicone outer shell that is then filled with a sterile salt water solution once inserted into the breast. Implant size can be modified, but over filling can cause the breasts to become hard and unnatural. Silicone implants have a silicone outer shell that is filled with silicone gel prior to implantation. Silicone implants are often preferred for their more natural feel. Since the introduction of silicone implants into the plastic surgery market, breast augmentation surgery requests have skyrocketed. Now that a new type of silicone implant has become available, perhaps we will see a rise in breast implant surgery again; though the statistics show that 286,000 breast augmentations were performed in the U.S. alone last year, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, indicating there is no risk of the procedure losing its popularity any time soon.
The development of the gummy bear implants has prompted some patients who have had previous breast augmentation to undergo a second surgery to replace their implants with the new model. Not only does the gel feel more natural, but it also has a better aesthetic effect and may be more comfortable for women with implants. The natural look and feel can be attributed not only to the substance, but also the shape. Form stable implants are produced in a tear drop shape, which is tapered at the top and becomes gradually thicker toward the bottom. This coincides with the inherent shape of the breast. Less wrinkling of the implant can also be expected due to its firmness.
As when making decisions about any form of surgery, patients should have an in-depth consultation with their surgeon before selecting the type of implant to use. Gummy bear implants may not be suitable for all women. Risks and complications include rotation of the tear-drop-shaped implant. Infection, bleeding, and rupture, which are universal among all implant types, are also possible although rare.
