PREOPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS FOR PATIENTS UNDERGOING INTRAVENOUS OR GENERAL ANESTHESIA
- You must not have anything to eat or drink (including water) for eight (6) hours prior to the appointment. For morning surgeries, you may not have anything to eat or drink after midnight. All medications other than those that can cause post-operative bleeding should be taken with a small sip of water the morning of surgery. Please review this list of medications on your printed pre-surgical instruction sheet.
- A responsible adult must accompany the patient to the office or hospital and be able to drive the patient home.
- The patient should not drive a vehicle or operate any machinery for 24 hours following the anesthesia experience.
- Please wear loose-fitting clothing with sleeves which can be rolled up past the elbow, and low-heeled shoes. Contact lenses, jewelry, and dentures must be removed at the time of surgery.
