Laser/Medispa Services / Thermage

Thermage is an exciting, FDA approved technology that tightens tissue without surgery. The procedure, also known as thermoplastic contouring, or ThermaLift, is non-invasive and there is no downtime or recuperation required.  Dr. Rubinstein was one of the first plastic surgeons to offer the Thermage technology in the New York area.  We are pleased to report that many of the people treated with Thermage at Laser & Cosmetic Surgery Specialists, PC have seen incredible results comparable to those of his facial plastic surgery patients.

The Thermage technology was developed to help correct some of the signs of aging skin. It is currently used to treat loose skin around the eyes, and on the forehead, the lower face and neck, as well as on the arms, abdomen, and thighs. Thermage is also an FDA approved treatment of acne and acne scarring. Results are long-lasting and, as recent clinical studies have shown, last at least 3 years.

Mechanism of Action

Thermage utilizes computer controlled radio frequency energy. The procedure causes collagen contraction and tightening without damaging the outer skin layer thus providing a non-surgical face lift. Initial results are seen within a few weeks and final results by 4 to 6 months. Generally, only one treatment is required. The treatment can be repeated as needed after 4 to 6 months.

Because Thermage was designed to address laxity in the skin, it is not recommended to treat spider veins, sun spots, or age spots. In these instances, combination staged treatments with Thermage and laser therapies, chemical peeling, or microdermabrasion are performed for optimal results.

The Procedure

The procedure is performed in a one to two hour period, depending on the size of the area to be treated. It involves multiple passes over the target areas, consequently there is some discomfort involved. Topical anesthesia cream or mild oral sedatives/pain killers help to minimize any pain. Some patients have opted to have the procedure in hospital under lite intravenous sedation, but the vast majority of cases are done at our office in Newburgh without the assistance of an anesthesiologist.

Few side effects have been reported.  There may be some redness for a few hours post operatively. It is also reasonable to expect minimal swelling and tingling in some of the treated areas.  This usually resolves within three to six days.

Make-up may be applied immediately after your treatment. Normal activities may be resumed, as there is no recovery period. Special care of your skin after Thermage is not required. There are no restrictions regarding sun exposure, but Dr. Rubinstein does prefer that his patients protect their investment with sunscreen.

Safety

The Thermage system has received FDA clearance in the United States for non-surgical toning and wrinkle treatment. It is a safe procedure with very few side effects. Slight redness of the skin may occur and is usually short lived. A burn to the skin is very uncommon.

Thermage can be used safely on all skin types, and there are no contraindications for treating tanned skin. Good to excellent results can be achieved on the face, neck, brow, abdomen, arms, buttocks, and thighs. Also, unlike other procedures, it can be undertaken at any time of the year. In fact, normal outdoor activities can be resumed immediately following a procedure.
